LET'S DECODE THE PERFECT GRADUATE MAJOR FOR YOU
Not everyone needs a famous major to become successful! Go away from the herd!

In this blog, we will talk about how one arrives at the decision of choosing the perfect major. I will also be telling you how I chose my graduate major. But, before that, let’s ponder over two major aspects mentioned below in points A and B. They can be worth your read.
A. Herd Mentality: Ruining Careers & Global Development
As some wise person said, “In a world where conformity reigns and individuality struggles to thrive, herd mentality takes center stage. It’s the easy path, the comfort of blending in, where the fear of standing out overwhelms the courage to be different. But amidst the crowded chorus of conformity, there is a whisper that echoes through the ages: Break free from the herd, dare to be yourself.”
Herd mentality has a detrimental effect on the careers of countless students, especially when it comes to the critical decision of choosing a graduate college or major. In the pursuit of security and social acceptance, many fall prey to the allure of popular choices, blindly following the crowd without considering their passions and aptitudes. Students may find themselves trapped in majors or graduate programs that fail to resonate with their true aspirations, causing dissatisfaction, lack of motivation, and ultimately hindering their long-term career prospects.
Herd mentality hampers the community by stifling innovation and perpetuating societal biases leading to inhibited social progress, and the hindered ability to adapt to change. Overcoming herd mentality is vital for fostering creativity and achieving meaningful advancements for the betterment of the world.
B. Have you realized what you are good at? What if you haven't?
It is crucial to bluntly recognize and embrace your strengths, weaknesses, and passions. Reflect on your skills, interests, and what truly excites you. Take a fearless inventory of your abilities and acknowledge what sets you apart. This self-realization will pave the way toward a fulfilling and purpose-driven life. Embrace the discomfort of introspection and be honest with yourself about what you genuinely desire. Many of us were purely unaware of the surroundings while choosing our undergraduate major. But, graduate school is a chance at making things right and taking a giant leap. So, let’s do it the right way.
Don’t panic if you haven’t yet found your true calling. Take action, explore different fields, and try new experiences. Be open to opportunities that come your way and embrace the journey of self-discovery. Seek guidance from mentors, engage in self-reflection, and be patient with yourself. Remember, it’s never too late to find your passion and redefine your path. Remember that self-discovery is a lifelong process, and it’s okay to take time to find your true calling. Embrace the uncertainty as an opportunity for growth and exploration.
C. Have I found my perfect major?
To be precise, it took me a period of 4 years to arrive at a point where I finally decided to choose a major. Have I chosen the “perfect” one? Well, only time will tell that. But, it was my responsibility to at least find out what I am good at and what I want to do ahead, and I can definitely say that I did it. It was tiring, but in the end, I feel it was absolutely worth it.
D. Where and when did it all start?
When I was in my sophomore year, I had decided to prepare for my graduate school applications. It was pretty soon as the applications weren’t going to open for me for at least next two years. But, its never late for the preparation. At first, it was difficult to decide whether what I was doing in my undergrad (Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering) was right or wrong for me. I had chosen this branch over Computer Science for a reason (to understand IoT well). Hence, it was a no-brainer for me to keep MS in ECE (Master of Science in Electrical & Computer Engineering) on my list.
E. How did I chase it? What helped me?
By the end of my sophomore year, I was able to land an internship at Franklin Templeton AMC India as a Software Development Intern in their Business Intelligence side. Over there, I was hired to help the department with developing computationally efficient codes for their BI-Tableau system. In this process, I learned how technology plays a vital role in an AMC (Asset Management Company). But was that all? Definitely, not (Sorry Mahi, I had to!). The biggest takeaway for me here was how the world beyond technology works. I was exposed to the management side of Finance companies. This was a launchpad moment for me. After this, I interned as a Data Analytics Intern at a startup called Ganit and then worked full-time for a brief period as a Consultant at PwC India. I wanted to leave no stone unturned. In my final year, I published a paper on Deepfake detection under the guidance of Prof. Faruk Kazi (CoE-CNDS, VJTI). Well, the project taught me the essentials of negotiation and team management more than it taught me the technical aspects of my undergraduate major. This project too has significantly driven my decision to choose a major.
After my internship, I started looking at various other branches like CS, ECE, MIS, Consumer Behavior, Industrial Engineering, Financial Engineering, Operations Research, and many more. The curiosity inside me found no bounds. Honestly, that’s typical of me. And when I say that I have to date gone through the websites of more than 300 universities for more than 7-8 majors out of all those they offer, I am not lying at all. I have read a lot which in turn has helped me a lot in my journey and in writing these articles. I want you all to do this. Decide only after you Research, Research, and Research. Not everyone needs 4 years like me to decide. I’d say 4 months are more than enough if you are smart enough.
