When it comes to choosing an Engineering college for undergrad, a lot of factors are involved including the location, the accessibility, the education quality, the infrastructure available for your favorite course, the fees, future job opportunities/ on campus placements, etc. Now, the factors are the same throughout the world, be it India, the US, or Qatar. Their intensity differs.
First of all, let me divide these factors for you to understand them well.
1. LOCATION
- If you stay in Mumbai, you need to decide will you be willing to relocate to some other city like Delhi or any outskirts college like Manipal or VIT.
- If you are staying in Mumbai and you can get into some good colleges in Mumbai (Ranked 200) and some colleges in the other city ranked 150, you have to decide if it’s really worth staying away from your house for that 50 ranks.
- Your placements and job opportunities are affected greatly by location. I’ll talk more about down in this article.
2. QUALITY OF EDUCATION
- When it comes to education quality, don’t go by the ranks. Sometimes, a professor at a moderately ranked university is way way brilliant and smarter at teaching than some professors at a top 20 university.
- Look at the courses offered to you by your university that you want to join. Check if they allow you to choose from multiple interdisciplinary courses. Look at how many electives you get to pursue and how many courses are allotted to the core courses in your course. These things will be easily available on the college websites.
- At first, we don’t think about all these things, but it’s quite necessary. It saves from any kind of regret in the future.
3. RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE
- Suppose, you are looking to pursue a course like B.Tech/B.E/BS in Computer Science/ Engineering, then check out the available infrastructure for research purposes in domains like Embedded Systems, Computer Communication Networks, VLSI, AI/ML, IoT, etc.
- These facilities help the students to strengthen their research quotient, uplift their profile with the help of possible journal/conference papers/patent publications. These facilities included with great professors will open infinite new doors to you.
For example, one can check out the Research Infrastructure at Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), Mumbai. The college has one of the best research facilities and professors to guide its students. From CoE-CNDS (Center of Excellence – Complex Non-Linear Dynamical Systems) Lab for Circuital Branch people to VJTI Racing – VJTI Aero for – SRA for Interdisciplinary Core Research.

4. COURSES AVAILABLE AND THE COURSE STRUCTURE
- If you are planning to pursue a course like Computer Science/ Computer Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering/Electronics and Telecommunications or Civil Engineering, etc. then it’s pretty much straightforward.
- But what if, you wanted to pursue a degree with majors and minors. Does your college have that provision? Can they allow you to pursue majors in Mechanical Engineering with minors in Economics? Yes, it’s possible. But, only a few colleges have such provisions (E.g. BITS Pilani).
- Check how many credits of your entire course are dedicated to core subjects and elective subjects. The more flexibility you have in choosing the electives, the better is the course according to me. The degree should be tailor-made with a set of pre-defined core subjects.

5. COLLEGE RANKING
- As I mentioned above in the location parameter, that ranking matters, definitely a lot, but there are a lot of factors involved. I am laying down all those factors for your better understanding.
- Some people are of the opinion that college ranking doesn’t matter. They do. But, it’s not everything that matters. Your college ranking contributes only a teaspoonful to your success. It’s all about what you are capable of. A better-ranking college will give you better opportunities, but won’t serve anything on a platter for you.
- Sometimes, a student at a tier-3 college might do a lot well in his life than some tier-2 or tier-1 student. So, just don’t go by the rankings.

6. PLACEMENTS - ON CAMPUS
- On-Campus College Placements is definitely one of the most important factors while choosing a college. A better-ranked university, but on the outskirts of a state might fetch not more than 50 companies every year for placements.
- Consider a college like VJTI, Mumbai. The college lies in the heart of the South Bombay-Mumbai Region. The college is visited by at least 100-150 companies every year just for undergraduate students and many more for masters students with an average package of 8-13 lakhs with the highest one crossing 60 lakhs and the lowest at 3.5-4 lakhs. It has a NIRF ranking of 82. So, it’s like a complete package. But, this college fails to give students the flexibility of taking a minor or a lot of elective options. The course structure is quite rigid. VJTI also places a lot of students on campus for summer internships.
7. PLACEMENTS - OFF CAMPUS
- Now, let’s take an example of a university like Sardar Patel College – SPCE and SPIT. The college falls just below in Mumbai for placements after IIT-B, VJTI, and ICT.
- Such colleges carry the advantage of great location, i.e., Mumbai. Mumbai has ample job opportunities. So, even if you fail to bag an on-campus opportunity, you have ample off-campus opportunities. The same thing is valid for colleges in the regions like Bengaluru (Bangalore), Hyderabad, Delhi, Chennai, etc.
8. LIFE AT COLLEGE - COLLEGE CLUBS
- When you are finishing your junior college, the first thing that comes to your mind while choosing a college other than the book-based education is college life.
- It’s very important that you become a part of some of the college clubs. It can be some literary society, technical fests, cultural clubs, sports clubs, etc.
- It’s not very important but becomes very important when you apply for higher studies, and at the same time, they help you keep a fresh mind. So, take them joyously seriously.
- This may want you to learn more about what clubs are available at your college you want to be a part of. Research about it and enroll as soon as you join the college.
9. LIFE OUTSIDE COLLEGE
- Now, it’s up to you what you want to do when you enroll in some college. Do you just want to be a bookworm or want to do something more?
- Some people might like a serene life and choose some college like NIT-Warangal that fall on the outskirts, and some people might like to stay in a city area. It’s totally up to you.
10. FEES
- The last and one of the most important point on this list is the fee structure of your course and college. For students this might not be a governing factor while choosing a college. But, take your parent’s ability into consideration.
- If you get into some government/public college, fee structure will be lenient. But, if you want to get into private college, reconsider all the above 9 factors and think by yourself “Is the college and the course really worth the fees?”
