ON-CAMPUS PLACEMENTS | BRIEF
I define on-campus placements as the process in which a college invites companies to their campuses for hiring students that helps companies get good candidates, students get good offers and colleges get good placement rates and ranking. It’s absolutely a collective process involving a student, a company, and the mediating college.
So, if you are one of those students appearing for a placement process, don’t be worried about it. Be confident. Because not only you are in need of a good offer, but the college and the company as well are into it with some targets to achieve. The college wants to build a good brand name and the company needs good students who can get onboarded with them.
Now, what if you do not succeed in the on-campus process? It’s very rare that someone doesn’t land a job during a campus process and moreover, if your college has a reputation, you might end up with multiple offers. But, in the worst case, what if not on-campus? Well, then you have an option to go for off-campus companies. I’ll be writing a completely new post for the same in the coming week. Until then, then dive into the On-Campus placement process.

FACTORS AND PARAMETERS | THE COMPANY TYPE
When you appear for the campus process, with what intention are you appearing? This is the question you should be asking yourself at least two months before the process begins. Sooner the better. Having an open mind towards things is a good thing, but try to have a liking as well. This helps a lot.
Ideally, 3 months before your internship drive/full-time placements drive, decide which company or rather which type of company you would love to be a part of. A campus is usually visited by at least 20-25 different types of companies. These are the types of companies I am talking about and not the companies.
- Based on your interest:
- Banks (Eg: Bank Of America, HSBC, Citi, ICICI, Axis Bank, etc.)
- Investment Banking Firms (Eg: Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JPMC, etc.)
- The Mighty Consultancies (Eg: PwC, Deloitte, KPMG, EY, BCG, McKinsey&Co., etc.)
- Product Development (Eg: SAP Labs, Oracle, Microsoft, Google, Apple, etc.)
- Core Companies (Eg: Siemens, Jio, Airtel, Tata Systems, LTTS, GE, etc.)
- Marketing & EdTech (Eg: Byjus, Toppr, etc.)
- Other companies like TCS, LTI, Wipro, Capgemini, Accenture, etc.
- Based on the CTC offered (varies college to college):
- Super Dream (35+ Lacs INR @VJTI – Google, Microsoft, Apple, etc.)
- Dream (20+ Lakhs INR @VJTI – Morgan Stanley, Samsung, Goldman Sachs, Udaan, etc.)
- Normal (Below 20 Lakhs INR @VJTI – Oracle, Citi, PwC, Deloitte, etc.)
- Based on the orientation:
- An MNC (Google, PwC, Microsoft, Accenture, etc.
- Well Established Startups (Eg: ZS Associates, PayTM, PhonePe, Shaadi.com, etc.)
- Mid-Sized Startups (Eg: Ganit Inc, Ugam Solutions, etc.)
- Burgeoning Startups (Eg: There are many such out there.)
PERSONAL VIEW:
I am a person who doesn’t want to restrict myself to a particular domain. I love to explore things. Working with a person rather than just the computer is my thing. My soft skills sometimes help me stand out from others. I am not much of a hardcore software developer guy. I find joy in designing, managing, and developing – literally everything. My likings fall well under the consulting category. CTC definitely matters, but I rather went with a Big4 company – a balance between my likings and the CTC offered. I have previously worked at 2 startups and an asset management company. And I am not joking, the startups know their things well. The employees are literally hardworking and we get to learn a lot. After this stint, I finally decided to join an MNC to try something different.
FACTORS AND PARAMETERS | THE REQUIRED PREPARATION
Well, as I explained about the company type in the earlier parameter section, you must have got an idea about what kind of preparation you might be needing. If not, continue reading.
- Coding v Non-Coding:
- First of all, there’s one thing that governs both the coding and the non-coding tests, aptitude. A good understanding of mathematics/quants can get you literally anywhere.
- The implementation of that mathematics (the algorithms) for a given problem is the real deal. This is where half the students give up.
- A good amount of time dedicated to coding practice on Codechef, Leetcode, Hackerrank, HackerEarth, CodingNinjas, etc. can make the work for you.
- But, if you are applying for companies like PwC, Deloitte, etc. code implementation is not what they demand. They will be in demand of a student who has the good aptitude, damn good soft skills, and much more.
- Softskills v Hardskills:
- A company like Wells Fargo, MSCI, Morgan Stanley will be equally interested in your coding skills as your soft skills. Having command over the former is a necessity and an expectation from the latter.
- A company like PwC, Deloitte, Bain & Co., McKinsey & Co., etc. will demand a plethora of skills from you. They would expect you to be a great orator, a great presenter, a great aptitude person, a person with the knowledge of business, etc. Although, having a command over coding is an expectation but not a necessity. They will further train you according to the project and client requirements.
- Aptitude Requirement:
- Preparation according to your dream company is very important. If you are targeting a company like Goldman Sachs, get ready to get bombarded with questions from Trigonometry which are at times at par with the JEE Mains.
- If you are preparing for a company like PwC, Deloitte, ZS Associates, etc., then prepare more from the riddles, Case-Studies, etc. The interviews and the group discussions (GD) are gonna be way more interesting.
PERSONAL VIEW:
I have friends that didn’t get into one of the consultancies but got into the banks/product companies. I at times struggle at coding questions from the graphs, trees, etc. Basically, I am not too good at it. Everyone has their own set of skills. You just need to prove them in your test and interview. When I sat for the process, getting into a Big4 Consultancy Firm was my target and by god’s grace, I achieved it. But, my plan B (getting into a product company) was ready as well.
For Coding, I enrolled with Coding Ninjas. It’s worth it as well not, it depends. I’ll be writing a post dedicated to this in the coming time. Along with this, Hackerrank was the one. Choose the language of your preference. I am a Python, SQL & C++ guy. My Web Dev & case study projects are my strengths. My past internship experiences were icing on the cake.
For aptitude, I followed IndiaBix (For Riddles & Puzzles), PrepInsta (For Basic Aptitude), YT Videos (For understanding how GDs are carried out), and followed the general interview questions via LinkedIn Learning.
If you really want to crack what you are aiming for, then go all in. It’s just a matter of 3-4 months. These months will be defining your next 5 years.

FACTORS AND PARAMETERS | YOUR DREAM?
Don’t ever be the person walking along with the herd. It’s definitely good to go with the flow, but don’t get vanished in it. You have your identity, act accordingly. A company that’s a dream for you might not be for a person sitting next to you. A company that pays you a small CTC might be the one where you can develop yourself. Also, don’t go just by the CTC. CTC should be the secondary criteria. The primary criteria should always be your liking. Promotions, switching, etc. are an essential part of your career. So, as a fresher, be open-minded.
In an ideal campus placement, a college tries to place each and every student. It’s the duty of students to prove themselves. The college will give you the raw materials, you have to make a worthy product out of it.
