By the end of class 12th, after getting our scores for competitive exams & boards, many of us started evaluating what college we can get into and what stream (Eg: CS/ ECE/ Mech, etc.) to pursue.
As usual, we started comparing our scores to the cutoffs of different universities for each branch. As usual, I understood that I can get into VJTI, and I have the freedom to choose any branch that I want. It was definitely a dream come true for me.
- I was under an impression that I will be working solely on the IoT along with satellite communication. Honestly, I had no idea that I would have subjects like VLSI, Microwave Engineering, etc. although it was obvious.
- I lacked the needed academic decision-making maturity before choosing a perfect stream for me.
- I was under the impression that getting into companies like Samsung, Qualcomm, etc. will become too easy after pursuing EXTC from VJTI. Well, it’s true that you can get these opportunities, but it’s not easy XD!
So, if you are one of those students appearing soon for your competitive exams and boards, have your decision made beforehand. It will only make your work easier. By doing this, you can have multiple plans ready in your hand by the time you apply to universities. This article hopefully will help you all take a wise decision.
DEGREE/COURSE OPTIONS IN ENGINEERING | A LIST
First of all, do a self-evaluation. Think about what you like the most. Is it design, drawing, coding, or research that excites you? Well, Engineering to a layman is very narrow and confined to 3-4 degree specializations. But, there’s a lot more going on around in this world. After going through the details of each specialization, one must have understood that there is no one best degree in engineering. Every degree specialization on its own has various pros and cons. One cannot imagine life without a house or a vehicle or a mobile device. So, every kind of engineer is equal and complements each other to make everything happen.
A specialization like Civil Engineering can get you a job that pays higher than Electrical and Computer Engineering. But for this, you have to crack a particular company paying you high. Also, just don’t look at the pay scale, check if it excites you. If not, then do not think of joining one such specialization.
Once you start exploring, you will find that there are hundreds of specializations and super-specializations out there. Before choosing any make sure you check these parameters related to those specializations for no kind of regrets later:

A college and a subject/specialization that’s a dream for you might not be for a person sitting next to you. The primary criteria should always be your liking. Jobs, Future Scope, etc. are an essential part of your career and especially your degree. So, as a fresher, be open-minded but thoughtful.
